The first one arrived along about October in a pink envelope and the fat Jeeter carried it from the trailer down to the chickenhouse where she gave it over to Mr. Raeford Lynch who sniffed at it and yipped once or twice and then sniffed at it again prior to giving it over to Benton Lynch who did not sniff at it or even look at it really but put it direct in his jacket pocket over the protests of his momma and the protests of his daddy who wanted to know was it a serious affection and who wanted to know did she come from nice people and who wanted to know when did it start up in the first place and who wanted to know could they meet her sometime presently to all of which Benton Lynch responded with a couple of yeses and a couple of noes and nothing much else of any utility to the fat Jeeter and nothing much else of any utility to Mr. Raeford either who chiefly was desirous to learn did Benton Lynch get some and so asked him straightaway once the fat Jeeter had struck out up the hillside and he was all set to wonder how if it was yes and to wonder why not if it was no, but it was not yes or no, was not anything but the usual vacant expression, and Mr. Raeford grew anxious and restless on account of having pondered the topic in the first place and so spat on a chicken to distract and relieve himself some.
